Karate Ireland are members of the International Karate Union and we are going to host the World Cup for Children and World Championships for Cadets, Juniors, Seniors and Veterans in Citywest Conference Centre from 19th to 22nd October 2017.
As part of the preparation for this event we are starting the selection process for the team to represent Karate Ireland at the event, we are holding a series of eliminations events and squad training sessions over the coming months. This elimination event will cover individual Kata and Kumite. This is open to all Karate Ireland members.
The first elimination event will be held in the CBS Sports Hall, Carlow on Sunday 18th September 2016 at 9am.
The other planned dates are
23rd October 2016 – Squad Training
13th November 2016 – Squad Training
22nd January 2017 – Second elimination event
People interesting in being part of the team will also be expected to compete in the Karate Ireland National Championships on Sunday 27th November 2016 at the Basketball Arena, Tymon Park, Tallaght, Dublin.
The venues for these events will be determined after the first elimination event and depending on interest levels we may look at regional squad training options. There will also be a third elimination event once the overall Karate Ireland calendar has been confirmed for next year.
For those unfamiliar with IKU they offer sections in all ages and styles.
Individual Kata is divided into the following sections based on style: Shotokan, Gujo Ryu, Wado Ryu, Shito Ryu, Shorin Ryu and ‘Other’ Styles to cover all remaining styles.
Children are sub-divided into
Children A – Under 7 years
Children B – 8 and 9 years
Children C – 10 and 11 years
Children D – 12 and 13 years.
Each age group is then divided by belt into: white to orange, green to purple, and brown to black.
Cadets are sub-divided into
Cadet A – 14 and 15 years
Cadet B – 16 and 17 years
All belts are combined at this level
Juniors are 18 to 20 years and all belts are combined
Seniors are 18 to 35 years and all belts are combined
Veterans A are 36 to 45 years and all belts are combined
Veterans B are 46 years and above, all belts are combined.
Details of IKU rules and approved Kata lists can be found at http://www.ikunion.org/wp-
The Kumite sections are also split into numerous weight and belt sections for the Children’s categories while all other ages have all grades combined but are split into multiple weight sections.
In order to put competitors into the correct sections we will be weighting everyone at every elimination event, please allow time for this when arriving at an elimination event. I will send out a form the week before to collect up names, dates of birth and grades of those interested in an attempt to speed up the registration process at the elimination event.
The entry fee for both the elimination events and squad training session are €10 per day
